Keyword Difficulty Checker (Free)
Built for Parasite SEO

Most KD checkers stop at a difficulty score. This one tells you how many of the top results are parasite pages instead of real independent sites, then scores the actual opportunity.

01 — Why a Normal KD Score Misses the Point

A standard difficulty score doesn't tell you why it's hard.

A standard keyword difficulty score, the kind Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Surfer hands you, tells you how hard a keyword is to rank for in general. It doesn't tell you why it's hard. A KD of 55 could mean ten entrenched independent domains with years of backlinks sitting on page one, which is genuinely bad news for almost any approach. Or it could mean a KD of 55 because five of those ten spots are Medium articles, Reddit threads, and a Forbes contributor post, host sites any reasonably competent parasite SEO campaign could realistically compete to join.

Those are completely different situations that look identical on a normal difficulty score. The first one tells you to walk away or commit to years of link building. The second one tells you there's a real door open, because if a parasite already cracked that SERP, another well placed one usually can too.

This tool exists specifically to surface that distinction, which is the exact judgment call that separates a useful keyword research session from a wasted one. It's also the kind of analysis ParasiteSEO.com's own tool doesn't run, since finding ranking opportunities is a different question than scoring whether a specific keyword's difficulty is driven by parasites or by genuine authority sites.

Want this analysis run by a person, not just a tool, on your full keyword list? See our parasite SEO services and we'll run real Ahrefs and SEMrush research as part of your campaign.

02 — How the Opportunity Score Works

The score combines two numbers, plainly, with no hidden weighting.

KD under 20: Low Priority

If the keyword's already easy, you probably don't need a parasite placement to compete on it. A normal page on your own site might do the job.

KD 20 or higher, 30%+ parasites: Strong Opportunity

High difficulty for a typical domain, but the door is demonstrably open since multiple parasites already hold spots.

KD 20 or higher, some parasites <30%: Moderate Opportunity

Worth considering, but most of the page is held by domains with real, independent authority.

KD 20 or higher, zero parasites: Weak Opportunity

Not impossible, since being first sometimes works, but unproven, and we'll tell you that honestly rather than pretending every keyword fits the parasite playbook.

That 30% threshold is a judgment call built from patterns across our own campaigns, not a number any search engine publishes. A keyword sitting right at that line deserves a second look rather than a blind trust in which side of the threshold it landed on.

03 — What This Tool Can't Tell You

Be honest about the limits before you lean on this too hard.

It can't see which specific parasite formats are working. Knowing that three of ten spots are parasites doesn't tell you if they're Medium articles, premium news placements, or Reddit threads, and that distinction matters a lot for planning your own move. Once connected to live data, the results table will show which platform each parasite result belongs to where we can identify it.

It treats every parasite result as equally beatable. A DA 95 Medium article holding a spot is a different competitive bar than a DA 60 smaller platform doing the same job, even though both count as "a parasite" in the ratio.

Keyword Difficulty itself is a third party estimate, built by Ahrefs or SEMrush's own proprietary models, not an official Google score. Treat KD the way you'd treat Domain Authority or Domain Rating: a useful directional signal, not gospel.

It's a snapshot. SERPs move, sometimes within weeks, especially after a core update. A strong opportunity today isn't guaranteed to stay one.

04 — What Most People Get Wrong

About parasite heavy SERPs and what they mean.

The mistake we see constantly: someone notices a SERP is full of parasites and assumes that means the keyword is easy. It doesn't. It means the keyword is hard for a normal domain specifically, which is exactly the situation that makes a parasite placement the right move rather than a normal content strategy. Confusing "parasites can win this" with "this keyword is easy" leads people to skip parasite SEO entirely on exactly the keywords where it would have helped most.

The second mistake: assuming any parasite placement automatically slots into an open spot. A SERP with three Medium articles ranking doesn't mean a fourth Medium article from you walks in easily, since Google's own ranking factors still apply within that comparison. Content quality, the specific angle, and the Tier 2 link support behind the new placement all still decide whether it joins that group or sits on page two behind it.

What we genuinely don't know with certainty: the exact threshold at which Google's algorithm treats a SERP as "parasite saturated" in a way that might trigger extra scrutiny under the Site Reputation Abuse policy. That policy targets abusive patterns, not the simple presence of legitimate parasite content, but nobody outside Google has full visibility into where any internal threshold sits.

05 — FAQ

Straight answers.

Does this replace Ahrefs or SEMrush's own KD checker? +

No, it uses the same kind of underlying difficulty data those tools provide, then adds a layer of analysis they don't run: classifying the SERP itself by parasite versus independent domain.

What counts as a "parasite" in this tool's classification? +

A domain we recognize as a known third party hosting platform, news site, or similar host, as opposed to a site that appears to be its own independent brand or business. The classification isn't perfect and may miss less common hosts.

Is Keyword Difficulty an official Google metric? +

No. It's a proprietary estimate from tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush, useful as a directional signal but not something Google itself publishes or endorses.

Why does a "Strong Opportunity" score matter if the keyword is still hard? +

Because hard for a normal domain and hard for a parasite placement aren't the same thing. A high KD score paired with several parasites already ranking means the difficulty is coming from a format you can realistically compete in, not from entrenched independent authority you can't.

Can I check a list of keywords at once? +

This tool checks one keyword at a time for now. For a full keyword list, get a free audit and we'll run the research as part of a real campaign.

What if the opportunity score says Weak, but I still want to try this keyword? +

It's not impossible, just unproven by what's currently ranking. We'd tell you that honestly on a real audit call too, along with what it would likely take to be the first parasite to crack that particular SERP.
